David Thomas, Llangynidr, whose death took place on December 11 1902,
was born at Llanboidy, Carmarthenshire in 1826 and removed to Hebron,
Pembrokeshire when about twelve years of age. It was there, under the
fostering care of the Rev Simon Evans (whose pupil he was till he
entered Brecon Memorial Collage in 1852) that Thomas began to preach. At
the end of his college course he received a call from the churches of
Llangynidr and Dyffryn Crawnon, Breconshire, and was ordained in October
1856 to a pastorate which he held till his retirement in 1896. During
these forty years his sound sense and devoted life won for him a large
place in the affections of all who knew him.
On his retirement the churches which he had served so well presented him
with an illuminated address and a purse of gold. During his long
pastorate both chapels were rebuilt. Dyffryn in 1870 and it was opened
free of debt. In 1890, Sardis Llangynidr was built on a plot of land
given for the purpose by Mr M P Jones JP.
He served on the Llangynidr School Board for six years, was chairman of
the County Association in 1895 and chairman of the Conference of the
United Cymanfa held at Builth.
